Durán (1579) describes this 20-day month of the calendar as a time of solemnity, recalling the rise of Huitzilopochtli, which was associated with large numbers of people being sacrificed. (see below)
"El duodécimo mes de este año de que vamos tratando tenía veinte días. Celebrábase en su primer día la fiesta de pachtontli, que quiere decir "mal ojuelo", nombre diminutivo; el cual día celebraban juntamente la fiesta solemne del advenimiento de Huitzilopochtli; en el cual día había un terrible y espantoso sacrificio de hombres. El mes doceno de que agora se ofrece tratar; en el día primero de él se hacía una solemnísima fiesta, donde moría mucha multitud de gente. Llamaban a este primer día del mes § pachtontli § , nombre diminutivo, como los demás que hemos venido declarando, porque luego se le seguía a este día diminutivo de éste, a veinte días el superlativo. § Pachtontli § quiere decir "mal ojuelo". Este "mal ojo" es una yerba que nace en los árboles y se cuelga de sus ramas. Sobre la cual yerba hacían y fundaban su solemnidad, fingiendo entre las nubes, o en el cielo, o en las estrellas, este signo de esta yerba de "mal ojo", como fingían los demás de que liemos venido tratando."
