This was the first word to gain currency as an equivalent to the European concept of owe. By the second decade of the seventeenth century, pialia and related words are found no more in connection with debts. The probable reason is that pia was evolving, becoming an equivalent of the Spanish verb tener, to have, and thus connoted permanent possesion. Pialia was supplanted by huiquilia.
