Search Issues: Update 2026-08-06

Some of our more complex, multi-field searches (such as the search field on our homepage and Search All Fields) are currently under repair and may not work as expected.

Thank you to all our users who emailed to alert us to the problem! We hope to have it repaired soon.

Meanwhile, elements of the Advanced Search are working and the Alphabetical Listings are working, too.

tlazalo.

Headword:
tlazalo.
Principal English Translation:

one who glues things; perhaps one who make mosaics

Gran Diccionario Náhuatl, citing A. Wimmer 2004, translated from the French to English here by Stephanie Wood, https://gdn.iib.unam.mx/diccionario/tlazalo/73291

Orthographic Variants:
tlazaloh.
Attestations from sources in English:

See an image that represents tlazalo in the Visual Lexicon of Aztec Hieroglyphs, ed. Stephanie Wood (Eugene, Ore.: Wired Humanities, 2020-present).

The hieroglyph for the name Tlazalo in the Matrícula de Huexotzinco shows a hand holding on to one of seven tesserae, likely pieces of mosaic that were being put into a mosaic. See our entry in the Visual Lexicon of Aztec Hieroglyphs for this glyph, which comes from folio 668 recto. On that same page, we share examples of turquoise blue tesserae and examples of mosaics that were made from them. (SW)
