Alonso de Molina:
nencayotl. mantenimiento humano. Alonso de Molina, Vocabulario en lengua castellana y mexicana y mexicana y castellana, 1571, part 2, Nahuatl to Spanish, f. 67v. col. 2. Thanks to Joe Campbell for providing the transcription.
Frances Karttunen:
NENCĀYŌ-TL possessed form: -NENCĀ sustenance, what one needs to support life / mantenimiento humano (M) [(3)Cf.49r,54r]. This conventionally appears in the phrase -YŌLCĀ -NENCĀ (both possessed) with the sense 'one's daily sustenance.' The possessed form -NENCĀ contrasts with NĒNCAH 'for something to be in vain' both in vowel length and in the presence or absence of a final glottal stop. See NEM(I), -YŌ. Frances Karttunen, An Analytical Dictionary of Nahuatl (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1992), 167.
