"Nahua ways of coming to understand and explain their environment—science—can be best described, according to Nahua scholar Eduardo de la Cruz Cruz, with the action-noun tlayehyecoliztli, referring to a practice, experience, and/or interaction (tla [non-specific, non-human object prefix, roughly translating to 'something'] + yehyecoa, ['to experience something, to test, sample, taste something'] + liztli [de- notes action; the being or doing of something]). Under tlayehyecoliztli would be specialized areas of expertise—all fundamentally relational— such as plant and tree cultivation, healing and medicine, animal husbandry and hunting, water management, and so on."
