Tlalnepantla was a cabecera in the sixteenth century, but it comprised two communities, and each of these (the Nahua part, Tenayuca, and the Otomi part, Teocalhueyacan) retained its own identity. The name for the Otomi part is, obviously, a Nahuatl place name. Tenayuca had a resident tlahtoani in 1519, and was more important in prehispanic history. Teocalhueyacan was originally, or at least earlier in time, an Otomi settlement in Tacuba. It was "variously classified as an estancia, a barrio, a cabecera, a parte, and a pueblo."
