a title given to a principal for distinguished service in war (see attestations in Spanish); this was also used as a name, possibly, by a tribute payer in Huejotzinco (see the Matrícula de Huexotzinco, folio 700 recto)

"Mecatzin. Uno de los valerosos "soldados capitanes" que se distinguió en la lucha contra los de Cuyuacan. El rey Itzcoatl le concedió el título de Cuauhquiahuacatl (269). Principal mexicano que en unión de Tlatolzaca, Tzompan, Epcoatl y Tlazoltentli (principales) y los macehuales Chicahuaz, Chica!, Acozauhqui, Tlahuazomal e Itzomyeca fueron por orden del rey Itzcoatl a vigilar Coapa. En este lugar tuvieron un pequeño encuentro con unos xuchimilcas, derrotándolos. (274)"
