John Bierhorst provides the definition quoted in the Principal English Translation field. He points to the verb tlalmecehua (to obtain land) and the noun tlalmacehalli (a grant of land, a landholding).
This also seems related to the noun tlalmaceuhqui, a person deserving of land, a land winner, a town founder, a term that became especially popular in the late Spanish colonial era, when land competition heightened. (SW)
