A. Casas, et al, "Ethnobotany and domestication in Xoconochtli, Stenocereus stellatus (Cactaceae), in the Tehuacán Valley and La Mixteca Baja, México," Economic Botany, 51 (1997), 279–292.

Attestations from sources in English:

It is worth noting that Xoconochco (today, Soconusco) is a place in Chiapas that is known as the cradle of cacao (from which chocolate is made). The xoconochtli is often translated as a sour prickly pear cactus fruit, but xocotl is a sour fruit, and perhaps the -nochtli part is a reference to a type of fruit or produce, and the cacao bean (usually cacahuatl, but that can also refer to a nut) might be referenced in xoconochtli. The cacao bean tastes quite sour until something sweet is added to it. Note, too, how xoco- has a similar sound to choco-, the start of chocolatl. Just some food for thought. (SW)
